We are seeking an exceptional and inspirational musician to assist Hallé Music Director Sir Mark Elder CBE and visiting conductors to the Hallé, and to conduct the Hallé in public concerts. The Assistant Conductor will also act as Music Director of the Hallé Youth Orchestra, taking direct responsibility for its musical development and performances. This post is generously supported by the Musicians Benevolent Fund and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
The Post and salary
This post provides an unusual opportunity for a young conductor to advance his/her skills in a sheltered and artistically stimulating environment over a two-year period. The successful candidate will be British, or will have been resident/studying full-time in the UK for three years, and under the age of 35. S/he will have considerable conducting experience, and will be currently undertaking professional conducting engagements.
The post will require a commitment of 200 half-days per annum, for which the post holder will receive an annual package of not less than £24,000 per annum.
The audition process
The audition process will be in two stages, with first stage auditions with the Hallé Youth Orchestra planned to take place in Manchester on Sunday 7 March 2010, and second stage auditions with the Hallé and interviews in Manchester on Sunday 21 March 2010.
The successful candidate will succeed Ewa Strusinska from Wednesday 1 September 2010, with potential opportunities for session-based work in advance of the contract start date.

» To conduct the Hallé for a minimum of five public concerts each year
» To act as Music Director of the Hallé Youth Orchestra
Duties and key tasks
The Assistant Conductor will be responsible to the Music Director and Head of Ensembles. S/he will play a key role in the performance and artistic planning of the Hallé Youth Orchestra. S/he will assist the Hallé’s Music Director and visiting conductors, and conduct public concerts. S/he will also shadow key administrative staff in order to receive an insight into the practicalities of working with a professional orchestra of international standing.
Key tasks of the Assistant Conductor are:
» To act as Music Director of the Hallé Youth Orchestra:
» conducting the Youth Orchestra’s regular weekly term-time rehearsals and public concerts (approximately 4-5 per year)
» leading the Youth Orchestra’s artistic planning
» leading the Youth Orchestra’s audition process
» To shadow the Hallé’s Music Director and visiting conductors, and assist them in matters of balance, off stage conducting, pre-rehearsals, and/or sectionals.
» To study scores associated with the above, reading all scores of new music sent to the Music Director and Head of Artistic Planning and providing advice on their suitability for performance.
» To sit in on Hallé rehearsals and performances (including touring) and be ready to stand in if appropriate.
» To conduct a minimum of five public concerts with the Hallé each year (This number may be higher).
» To learn about the administration of an orchestra by working with the Hallé’s Head of Artistic Planning, Concerts Director, Head of Ensembles and other members of the Hallé’s administration team.
» To play a part in the Hallé’s artistic planning team, attending meetings as and when required, and participate in the Hallé’s education programme where appropriate.
The Assistant Conductor is also responsible for key liaison with the:
» Music Director
» Chief Executive
» Head of Artistic Planning
» Concerts Director
» Head of Ensembles
» Youth Orchestra Administrator
And others, particularly in his/her role as Artistic Director of the Hallé Youth Orchestra.
Essential skills and abilities for the job
» Degree in music or equivalent
» Conducting experience to postgraduate level or equivalent
» Current experience of professional conducting engagements
» In depth knowledge of orchestral repertoire and programming
» Practical understanding of orchestral practice and policy
» Good member of a team with excellent interpersonal skills
» Confident communicator, particularly with young people
» Hard and flexible worker
» Good learner
Desirable skills and experience
» First hand experience of artistic planning for, and conducting of a youth orchestra
» First hand experience of general orchestral education / outreach work
It is anticipated that the Assistant Conductor will be offered external engagements which s/he may, within reason, take up at the discretion of the Music Director and Head of Artistic Planning.
In addition to the Music Director, mentors from within the Orchestra will be allocated to the Assistant Conductor to provide advice, feedback and evaluation.
