Job Description:
1) Adjusts string tension to tune instrument, using hand tools and electronic tuning device
2) Assembles instruments according to specifications, using hand tools
3) Carves wood replacement parts, such as wedges or plugs, according to the shape and dimensions of the
instrument or/and bow
4) Disassembles instrument or bow, using hand tools
5) Inspects musical instruments, such as cellos, violins, violas and double basses, to determine defects
6) Plays instrument to determine pitch
7) Reassembles instrument or bow with new or repaired part, using glue, hairs, yarn, resin, and clamps
Refinishes instruments to protect and decorate them, using hand tools, buffing tools, and varnish
9) Removes cracked, worn, or broken parts of instrument, using heated knife and hand tools
10) Repairs broken parts, using glue, clamp, and handpress
11) Supervises and/or trains lower level technicians, apprentices, and/or student assistants
12) Recommends the requisition of materials for needed repairs
13) Requisitions and distributes needed equipment and supplies
14) Establishes, schedules, and assigns periodic preventive maintenance procedures
Qualifications and Education:
Good hearing, mechanical aptitude, and manual dexterity needful.
For dealing directly with customers, a neat appearance and a pleasant, cooperative manner are important.
Certification from technical schools and colleges offering courses in string instrument repair
Experience:
At least 5 years experience in repairing
